Biography

Chantal Gibson is a writer, artist and educator living in Vancouver. As a poet, she enjoys writing about visual art and language and the cultural ideas quietly embedded in everyday things, like old photographs, schoolbooks, and postage stamps. Her debut book of poetry, How She Read (Caitlin Press, 2019) explores the stories of Black Canadian women. It won the 2020 Pat Lowther Award and was shortlisted for the prestigious 2020 Griffin Poetry Prize. As a visual artist, she likes to create visual poetry by altering old history books with braided black thread. Her book sculptures try to imagine the voices of people not include in the text. She teaches in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University.
