Biography

Born in Kansas, the American poet Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950) was the author of Spoon River Anthology, a series of poems in which the dead citizens of a small town confess the secrets they kept while alive. It was his greatest creative and critical success, but the book was also seen as scandalous and damaged his reputation in conservative circles.
